How long would it take to win the lottery?

Play every draw for a lifetime and your chance of ever hitting the jackpot is still tiny. Choose a game and see how many years it would take to reach a 50% chance, and what you would have spent along the way.

This assumes every ticket has the same independent chance each draw, which is how a fair lottery works. Past draws and earlier tickets change nothing. Playing for many years does not make a win "due".

Why it takes so long

Each draw is independent with a very small chance. Playing a single Powerball ticket in every draw, three a week, gives you about a 0.0016% chance of ever winning in 30 years, roughly 1 in 62,000. To have a 50% chance you would need to play for about 1.3 million years.

This is not a reason to feel bad about buying a ticket. It is a reason to think of tickets as entertainment, not as a plan.

Why you are never "due"

A common mistake is to think that years of losing build up credit. They do not. Every draw is a fresh start, so your chance is the same on the 1,000th draw as on the first. The table shows your cumulative chance, which grows slowly because you keep adding small chances, not because any single draw becomes more likely.

Frequently asked questions

How long would it take to win Powerball?

With one ticket in every draw, about 1.3 million years for a 50% chance of the jackpot.

What are the odds of winning if I play every week for 50 years?

With one ticket per Powerball draw, about 0.003%, or roughly 1 in 37,000. The calculator shows other combinations.

Does playing the same numbers each time matter?

No. Each draw is independent. Repeating numbers neither helps nor hurts.

Is there any game I could win in my lifetime?

Smaller local games with fewer combinations give realistic chances over many years, though with smaller prizes.
