Mega Millions at a glance
- You pick 5 numbers from 1 to 70 and 1 Mega Ball from 1 to 24.
- There are 290,472,336 possible combinations.
- Draws are on Tuesday and Friday nights.
- Since April 2025 the ticket costs $5 and includes a multiplier on non-jackpot prizes.
How the odds are calculated
Lottery odds come from counting combinations. If a game draws 5 numbers from 69, the number of different 5-number sets is "69 choose 5", which is 11,238,513. If it also draws 1 bonus ball from 26, multiply by 26 to get 292,201,338 different tickets. Your odds of the jackpot are one in that number.
Smaller prizes are counted the same way: how many tickets match exactly 4 main numbers and the bonus ball, divided by the total number of tickets.
What the odds do and do not mean
- Every ticket has the same chance, whatever numbers you choose and however long you have played.
- Buying two different tickets doubles your chance, which is still tiny.
- Past draws do not make numbers hot, cold or due.
- A positive prize is not the same as profit. Most small prizes are worth no more than the ticket.
