This splits a prize in proportion to what each person paid. Taxes are not deducted here, and rules for group wins differ by state and lottery, so some groups need to file extra forms. Agree the rules in writing before you buy.
How pools split prizes
The fairest rule is simple: each person's share equals their contribution divided by the total paid in. If three people paid $20, $10 and $10, they own 50%, 25% and 25% of any prize. The calculator applies exactly that.
Write the rule down before you buy tickets, along with who buys them, how you prove which tickets belong to the pool and what happens if someone drops out. Most disputes in pools come from unwritten rules, not from the prize.
Good habits for pools
- Collect the money before the draw, not after.
- Photograph the front and back of every ticket and send the photos to the group.
- Keep a written list of members and amounts.
- Decide in advance who claims a large prize and how it is shared out.
- Agree how taxes are handled, since each person is generally responsible for their share.
