Verifiable random number generator
Most random number generators ask you to trust them. This one takes its randomness from drand, a public beacon run by independent organisations. Pick a number from 1 to N and anyone can check where it came from.
Round number for a moment in time
drand is a public randomness beacon run by independent organisations. It publishes a fresh, signed random value every 3 seconds. Using a round you named in advance is a simple way to make a random choice that nobody can steer.
Why a public beacon is different
A random number from your own computer or a website is invisible: nobody can tell whether it was chosen on purpose. A beacon publishes a signed random value on a fixed schedule for everyone. If you name a round before it exists, neither you nor anyone else can know the value, and everyone can check it afterwards.
Good uses
- Settling a draw, raffle or giveaway in public.
- Choosing a random winner from a numbered list.
- Scheduling a future random decision: name the round now, reveal the result later.
- Teaching how verifiable randomness works.
How the number is made
The tool reads the round's 256-bit random value as one large number, divides by N, and uses the remainder plus 1. With N far smaller than the value's range, any bias is negligible.

Frequently asked questions
What is drand?
A public randomness beacon that publishes a new signed random value every 3 seconds.
Can anyone predict a future value?
No. A value does not exist until enough independent participants produce it.
How do I verify the number?
Open the drand link under the result, compare the value, then compute its remainder when divided by your range. The tool shows the steps.
Is this suitable for gambling?
It is the same randomness we use for our weekly lottery draws. Whatever you use it for, follow your local law.
