How to check a crypto lottery draw for yourself

"Provably fair" is a claim you will see on many crypto lottery sites. It should mean something specific: you can check that the winners were not chosen by the operator. Here is what that looks like, and how to tell real verification from marketing.

The problem with trusting a lottery

In a traditional lottery you cannot see how the numbers are chosen. You rely on regulators and auditors. Online, a dishonest operator could pick numbers that favour themselves and nobody outside would know.

What verifiable randomness is

A verifiable random function (VRF) returns two things: a random number, and a cryptographic proof that the number was generated correctly and could not have been chosen or altered by anyone, including the operator. Anyone can check the proof. Chainlink VRF is a widely used service that does this. A fair draw has these properties

• Sales close before the random number is requested. Otherwise someone could buy tickets already knowing the result.
• The number comes with a proof that is checked automatically. Not "trust our script".
• The rule that turns the number into winners is public. For example: take the random number, derive a list of ticket numbers from it, skip duplicates. Anyone can repeat the steps.
• The history is permanent. Past draws stay on a public record and cannot be edited.

What verification does not tell you

Verifiable randomness proves the draw was not manipulated. It does not improve your odds, and it does not prove the operator is licensed, that the software has no bugs, or that prizes will be paid. Those need separate checks: a published audit, clear rules, and legal compliance.

Red flags

• "Provably fair" with no explanation of how to verify anything.
• Winners chosen by a private server with no public proof.
• Ticket sales that stay open after the draw result is known.
• No published rules for prize splits or odds.

If a lottery cannot show you how to check a draw, treat the claim as marketing.
